Time & Time Zones.

January 22, 2015

Sunrise at Coffin PointclockFor the last few days the image of time has passed through my mind. I think it started out with the fact that I am now 3 hours ahead of pretty much all my friends and family. At first, I really liked it. It was as if I was beating everyone to the starting line. You see, I’m an early riser. Like 4:30 am early! I have a routine which I’ve been doing for almost 2 years now. I wake up early, read the Bible, do a few devotional readings, pray and meditate on what God would have me do for the day. Check my emails, make fun of things and people (mostly myself) on Facebook. I love this time of day for several reasons, including the stillness of the morning, the sheer quiet, alone time with God. I do not wake Laura up and the dogs rarely even notice when I get up. (they do however demand breakfast around 5:45!) And the sunrises here are absolutely stunning. That alone should motivate people to rise and shine early!

When I lived in California, I would often text some encouraging words or verses to a few friends who are also early risers. Well, I can’t do that anymore. Well, not unless I want to lose friends fast. No matter how cheerful the quote, it is not generally well received at 3am PST. I find myself emailing these same friends, but it’s not the same. I don’t get a response for several hours or no response at all.

There, in lies my dilemma. I would love to chat with friends and family, yet our schedules are now so different that I am finding it hard to stay in touch properly. When I’m eating lunch, they are just arriving at work. When I’m settling in for bed, most are just arriving home from work. The other day, my friend Eric called, I didn’t answer because I was just pooped. I know Eric was driving home from work, probably stuck in traffic and this is the best time for him to call me. As lie in bed that night, all I could say was, “You should have picked up, what if Eric needed something?” That’s when it occurred to me. Time is truly our most precious gift.

“Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. You can make more money, but you can’t make more time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you’ll never get back. Your time is your life. That is why the greatest gift you can give someone is your time.
It is not enough to just say relationships are important; we must prove it by investing time in them. Words alone are worthless. “My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.” Relationships take time and effort, and the best way to spell love is “T-I-M-E.”
Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life

I’m not going to beat myself up over this. I know I will adjust to my new time zone eventually and so will my friends and family. I’ll do better eventually.

If you ever get a text at 4am from me, please excuse me and I apologize in advance for my enthusiasm. To those of you who haven’t gotten a call or text from me lately, it’s probably better that way!

Here’s the text that I didn’t send to you, in case you were wondering.

“But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” – Psalm 13:5-6

Peace be with you.
